Meet MA member Tracy Busse
I have been teaching meditation online since 2020. More recently I studied with Pauline McKinnon OAM and qualified as a Stillness Meditation Teacher and now practice and teach Stillness Meditation online. This medically derived and therapeutic form of meditation was developed by the late Ainslie Meares in the 1980’s.

My meditation practice and personal experiences have taught me that everything always starts with yourself – self-care and wellbeing are crucial. It is essential to take care of your own health and needs and then you are in a stronger position to thrive and be of service or care for others. Love and connection are everything to me, they come first and this always begins with a connection to self and self-awareness.

What’s the story behind your first meditation experience?
I first started meditating when I was running a corporate health program as part of my HR role in the late 90s. Fast forward to 2010 when my heart stopped beating. After a sudden cardiac arrest, I was placed in an induced coma and awoke three days later with an incredible sense of peace and love. The memory lingered but there were dark days ahead. Eventually yoga found me and I established a more regular meditation practice which helped me regain inner strength and lead a full life again. My own meditation practice is a daily part of my self-care routine and teaching meditation is an opportunity to share the peace and love with others.

What or who inspires you?
Nature is, and always has been, my source of inspiration. I love the beach and my daily walks with our dog in a nearby wetlands and forested area. I just love nature’s capacity to relax, rejuvenate and restore us.

My favourite quotes all come from my grandmother’s diary. I used many of her beautiful words in my book ‘Calm Through Chaos: how to build resilience and thrive in life’. One of the chapters called ‘Nature Calls’ begins with this quote:

“Looking over Fish Hoek now, the mountains are deep purple, and the sky is bright pink. I mention this because, even though my heart is heavy, my eyes can’t keep away from the beauty of this evening, bringing hope and a promise” Desmẻ Anderson

My grandmother was referring to the mountains where she lived in Cape Town. Although I am in Melbourne now, my family have been in the Fish Hoek Valley for 5 generations.

Cushion time: How long did you meditate for today?
20 mins sitting upright on a chair.

The getting of wisdom: What’s the best, or most important thing, you’ve learned as a meditation teacher?
To practice what I preach, regular meditation! Learning to let go is an act of courage and trust and truly one of the most valuable things we can do for ourselves – physically and mentally.

What makes your heart sing and what have you come to value most?
Working with people 1:1 makes my heart sing. I always wanted to be a teacher, and I get satisfaction from seeing others shine, be creative and find even more joy in their lives.

The best thing today: What’s the most inspiring or loveliest thing you’ve seen or experienced today?
My daffodils starting to bloom – the joy of my garden always inspires me.
