Meet MA member Wendy Widdicombe
I believe that taking a precious pause in your day can help you achieve a more balanced, peaceful and fulfilling life through the powerful benefits of mindfulness and meditation. Since October 2024, I have been teaching meditation and currently volunteer weekly at Wirreanda Aged Care in West Pennant Hills, where I lead meditation sessions for both Independent Living and Nursing Home residents. The key elements that makes me a better teacher is when I create a meditation script, I believe it should be crafted with intention and mindfulness, ensuring it resonates with participants. I write a well-written script and ensure that it is uplifting, comforting, and designed to leave attendees feeling positive and at ease.
What’s the story behind your first meditation experience?
Many years ago, I attended yoga sessions where meditation was an integral part of the practice. From the very first session, I found myself drawn to the stillness and sense of peace it brought. Meditation helped calm my mind and body, leaving me feeling refreshed and uplifted for the rest of the day. That experience sparked my appreciation for mindfulness, and it has stayed with me ever since.
What or who inspires you?
I find inspiration within myself—through my personal growth, experiences, and the lessons I have learnt along the way. Tuning into my own inner wisdom and resilience keeps me motivated and grounded. I believe that we all have the ability to inspire ourselves by reflecting on our journeys, embracing challenges, and recognizing our own strength.
Cushion time: How long did you meditate for today?
Today I did a walking meditation for 1/2 hour and then a 10 minute meditation in the chair and I am off to yoga tonight where meditation is part of it.
Meditation Apps, yes or no?
yes
You’re the voice: Do you sing in the shower?
sometimes
The getting of wisdom: What’s the best, or most important thing, you’ve learned as a meditation teacher?
The most important lesson I have learnt as a meditation teacher is the power of clear, confident communication. This is especially crucial when guiding sessions in aged care, where speaking loudly and clearly ensures everyone can follow along. Knowing my script inside out allows me to lead with ease and presence, creating a more immersive experience. Equally important is the art of the long pause—allowing space for stillness, reflection, and deeper relaxation.
What makes your heart sing and what have you come to value most?
My heart sings when I am with family. I cherish every moment spent with them, knowing that time together is one of life’s greatest gifts. Their love, laughter, and presence bring me the deepest joy, and I have come to value these connections above all else.
The best thing today: What’s the most inspiring or loveliest thing you’ve seen or experienced today?
The most beautiful moment today was having lunch with my cousin after more than 20 years apart. The warmth of her hug was unforgettable, filled with love, memories, and the joy of reconnecting. It was a reminder of the power of family bonds and how time may pass, but true connections remain.
