Meet Meditation Australia member Jen Hill who has been teaching meditation and mindfulness for more than seven years.
I teach many different meditation and mindfulness techniques, all with the intention of helping people remember, savour and live from the presence of (their) Being. I teach meditation and mindfulness in workplaces, via 1-to-1 coaching, private classes and a weekly public community group.
Regardless of the setting or the audience, I’ve learnt that it is only when we are fully present and aware, and not lost in thought, that we can access and connect to our Being’s natural qualities of calm, focus, clarity, compassion, and connectedness, among other innate qualities. And it is through this centredness and presence that we can reduce stress and anxiety, boost our wellbeing and strengthen our resilience to challenge and change.
In other words, what we are often seeking is already, always here ‘within us’ but we miss it as we commonly search outside of ourself for sources of peace, love and happiness. This makes me a better teacher because I understand the source of our Self, our stress and our contentment lies within.
What’s the story behind your first meditation experience?
My first meditation experience was at a friend’s house about 20 years ago. It really piqued my interest. Around the same time, meditation was recommended to me by a counsellor, so I started practising and found it very cathartic. So many tears flowed! It felt very healing and connecting, and I pretty quickly felt some relief from stress and anxiety. Having been raised by atheist scientists, I was very curious to explore the spiritual elements of meditation and my own spirituality. A gift I’m so grateful for, and one that keeps on giving.
What or who inspires you?
So much and so many people! Let me keep it simple and just say non-duality inspires me.
Cushion time: How long did you meditate for today?
Today has been a great day for meditation: 30 minutes sitting, another 45 mins moving and lying down and 30 mins walking!
Tools: Meditation Apps, yes or no?
Meditation apps are better than nothing, but perhaps not as good as finding a teacher and/or group to attend in person. They sure have increased awareness and access to meditation training, globally, and that is an excellent thing. So, ultimately, yes, although finding a teacher you resonate with is even better.
You’re the voice: Do you sing in the shower?
Nope lol
The getting of wisdom: What’s the best, or most important thing, you’ve learned as a meditation teacher?
We are all one consciousness, one Being, manifesting as infinite unique and diverse forms.
What makes your heart sing and what you have come to value most?
Nature, Love and Creative self-expression makes my heart sing. What I have come to value most is Being or Presence; the nature of Self and reality.
What’s the most inspiring or loveliest thing you’ve seen or experienced today?
Lunch with my husband.
Jen Hill
